This project aims to identify biological active ionic-liquids promising to be used in pharmaceutical formulations. To this purpose, scientists are cooperating in distinct pathways: in the synthesis in organic chemistry, in the preparation and purification of ionic functional liquids, in the measurement and interpretation of thermophysical and solubility related properties, and in the study of anti-bacterial activity and toxicological effects.
The objective of this project is the development of new biologically active ionic liquids using fluoroquinolones as active ingredients. These new ionic liquids must provide functional advantages over the original active ingredients providing new properties and new ways of drug delivery. The key point of this methodology (ionic liquids) is the judicious combination of cations and anions in order to obtain compounds in liquid or with low fusion points, while maintaining the desired biological properties.
