1. Admissions Conditions

1.1. Specific conditions:
1.1. Specific conditions:
1.1.1. Doctoral programme Communication Sciences: the following students can apply to this doctorate programmes:
a) Students with a master degree or legal equivalent in Communication Sciences or other areas;
b) Students with a bachelor degree (undergraduate degree) in Communication Sciences or related areas that have a curriculum considered especially relevant by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the University Fernando Pessoa
c) Doctoral students in Communication Sciences or related areas enrolled in other Higher Education Institutions, national or foreign, may also apply for the course, under a joint regime. Doctoral students in co-tutorship will obtain doctoral degrees from the Fernando Pessoa University and from their home institution.
d) Students that started their doctoral studies at another Institution of Higher Education, wish to complete them at UFP, in which case they may request credit, for the purposes of the doctoral course, for courses already completed.
1.1.2. Doctoral programme in Earth Sciences: applicants must have a master degree from Engineering, Sciences or Sciences and Technologies higher education institutions, preferably with undergraduate degrees in the same area;
1.1.3. Doctoral programme in Ecology and Environmental Health: applicants must have sufficient education in the Sciences or Engineering areas, as well as a master degree in one of the following areas: Environment; Biology; Health Sciences or Chemistry;
1.1.4. Doctoral programme Political and Humanitarian Studies: the following students can apply to this doctorate programmes:
a) Student with a master degree or legal equivalent can apply in fields of training concerning the scientific areas of the study cycle, namely: Political Science, International Relations, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Social Studies, History, Anthropology, Economics, Law, Human Rights, Humanitarian Action, Humanities and related areas;
b) Students with a bachelor degree (undergraduate degree) with a particularly relevant academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the University Fernando Pessoa as attesting to the capacity to carry out the cycle of studies.


2. Selection criteria:

2.1. Master degree, or legal equivalent, in the scientific area of the doctoral programme;
2.2. Highest classification in the master degree, or legal equivalent;
2.3. Undergraduate degree, or legal equivalent, in the scientific area closer to that of the doctoral programme;
2.4. CV and interview or motivation letter.

4. Application:

4.1. Before you apply you must:

– Check out the available Research Areas on the course’s Webpage;
– Prepare your dissertation proposal;
– Check to make sure the application period for the regime you wish to apply to (continuity or intensive) is open.

4.2. Application submission:
– Exclusively online, in: https://inforestudante.ufp.pt

4.3. Necessary documents:
– European Union identification document; Non European Union nationals: Passport  OR, if already living in Portugal:Student Visa or Residence Permit issued by the Portuguese Foreigners Services;
– Scanned copy of the Diploma or Certificate of undergraduate degree, with final grade of course (see Notes 6.3 and 6.4)*;
– Authenticated copy of the Diploma or Certificate of master degree, with final grade of course (see Notes 6.3 and 6.4)*;
– Updated CV (in Europass template);
– Proof of the activities listed in the CV (example: employers’ statements on official company paper, duly stamped and signed);
– Dissertation proposal (UFP template);
– Motivation letter (free text format)

* In the case of foreign qualifications:
i. Applicants must submit an official declaration, issued by the Higher Education Institution that confers the academic degree, in which the final classification of the course is indicated (if it is not included in any of the documents indicated above) and the respective quantitative classification scale used, including the minimum mark for approval (example: 0 to 100; minimum mark for approval: 50). If this statement is not submitted, the minimum approval rating on the Portuguese scale (10 marks) will be considered. The same applies to any other qualification certificates or diplomas submitted in the application;
ii. Diplomas/certificates that are not issued in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish must be accompanied by a translation into Portuguese, which must be legalized by the Portuguese consular agent in the country of origin of the diploma / certificate or legalized by the Hague Apostille.

Note: The application is only validated after the payment of the Application Fee.

5.  Registration:
Admitted students must register online, within the period indicated in the admission calendar. The validation of the registration is done in person at the Admissions Office, within the period indicated in the admission calendar, with:
a) Non EU nationals: Student Visa for Portugal or Residence Permit issued by the Portuguese Foreigners Services;
b) Students with Non EU qualifications: hard copies of the duly authenticated certificates (as per Notes 6.3) and offical translations (as per i. and ii. of 4.3).

Note: The registration is only validated after the payment of the Registration and the Tuituion Fee.

6. Notes:
6.1. There are no refunds of payments, nor return of documents;
6.2. The documents must be scanned in order to allow a correct visualization, with the white seals or stamps of the academic diplomas/certificates and the documents evidencing the activities mentioned in the CV must be clearly visible;
6.3. For applicants with certificates from Non EU education institutions: the registration  will only be validated, for the purposes of attending the course, upon delivery, within the deadline indicated in the admission calendar, of copies or originals of the foreign diplomas/certificates submitted in the application duly authenticated with the Hague Apostille in the country of issue of the documents. If the country has not adhered to the Convention, the documents will have to be legalized by the official education services of that country and by the respective Portuguese diplomatic authority.
6.4.  For applicants with certificates from European Union education institutions: the Academic Services may require the presentation of the originals of the certificates and their translation, authenticated in the terms previously stipulated;
6.5. The Dissertation proposal must comply with the model supplied by the Admissions Office and cannot exceed 10 pages;
6.6. Only complete applications can be considered;
6.7. The opening of the course requires a minimum number of registrations.
